Physical and chemical properties Element symbol Th; atomic number 90; atomic weight 232.04; peripheral electron arrangement 6 d27s2; located in the seventh cycle ⅢB group (can also be listed as Ⅳ B group). Atomic radius 179.8 picometer (α); Electronegativity 1.3; The main oxidation numbers are +3 and +4. Silver-white metal; shiny; softer; malleable. Density 11.72g/cm3; Melting point 1750 ℃; Boiling point 4000 ℃. The chemical properties are more active. It is easy to be oxidized and tarnished in Air; powder can spontaneously ignite; combustion produces ThO2. All non-metals can be combined with thorium. It can also form binary intermetallic compounds with beryllium, aluminum and magnesium. Insoluble in water; dilute acid and hydrofluoric acid and alkali solution. Soluble in concentrated hydrochloric acid and aqua regia. Concentrated nitric acid can passivate it. It is a natural radioactive element; the half-life is about 14 × 109 years. It is used to manufacture thorium magnesium alloy with high strength creep resistance at high temperature. Gas lamp gauze cover, high temperature ceramic, catalyst, electronic tube and photocell. 232Th can be converted into atomic fuel 233U when irradiated by neutrons in the reactor; therefore thorium is the raw material of nuclear fuel. In 1828, the Swede Bezilius discovered thorium while analyzing the black granite mine. The main ores are monazite and cerium thorium. It is prepared by reducing thorium dioxide with metallic calcium under the protection of argon; or by electrolysis of a molten mixture of ThCl4, NaCl and KCl.
